MP3 – The Spammers New Weapon

Tuesday October 23, 2007

Spammers are now utilizing MP3 files in a bid to defeat e-mail filters. If you receive digital music files, either from an unsolicited e-mail or via a P2P network, then you run the risk of audio spam. This new tactic, which started to surface last week, involves a weird ‘Darth Vader’ type female voice pitching the stock of a company called Exit Only Inc.

Normal text based spam messages can easily be dealt with using spam filters that most e-mail clients have. In contrast, audio files are significantly more complex and each spam MP3 that has appeared has been slightly different from the last.

If you receive an unsolicited e-mail that comes from an unknown source, then the best course of action is to trash it – especially if it has an enticing attachment.
