Has Amazon Forced Apple Into a Price Drop?

Tuesday October 30, 2007

Amazon, who recently launched their digital music service, might just have forced Apple to drop the price of their DRM-free music. Apple's iTunes Plus service now offers DRM-free downloads for 99 cents; previously the price to download an unprotected track was $1.29. This price drop will benefit the consumer and hopefully influence other services to follow suit.

Consumers demand the freedom to use their purchased music with a wide range of players; DRM-free music gives the flexibility to use any hardware device that is MP3 capable. We are continuing to see a trend in the uptake of DRM-free music, and both iTunes and Amazon have had great success. The big question hanging over DRM now is, “how long before it disappears altogether?”

Now Apple have dropped their DRM-free music price, it will be interesting to see whether they will drop their normal 99 cents per track price to compete with Amazon’s 89 cents.
