Digital Download Experiment – Name Your Price!

Wednesday November 21, 2007

Radiohead, an English rock band who completed their contract with EMI in 2004, is offering its new In Rainbows album for digital download with a twist – pay what you want for it. The new album is available from their web site as a Zip file which contains 10 MP3 tracks.

During the ordering process, you will be able to enter your nominated price to purchase the album. This is where your conscience will hopefully kick in and the temptation to enter zero will be averted. If you think it’s worth the average price that other digital music services offer (around $10) then enter that, if you deem it to be only worth the price of a single track (99 cents or less) – or even worthless, then the choice is yours.

A small study recently conducted by ComScore Inc., found that 62 percent of visitors had no conscience at all and downloaded the album for free. Those who did pay, forked out $6 on average for the album.
