Nokia To Offer Unlimited Music Downloads

Wednesday December 5, 2007

In a recent press release, Nokia has revealed that it has struck a deal with Universal Music Group to provide unlimited digital music to purchasers of certain Nokia devices. Their Comes With Music service, which will be available next year, will give you a year to access as many songs as you like, and the best bit is - your music will still work after your free period expires.

It’s at this point you may well be asking, “is there a catch?” Well, the answer to that is, “yes, several”. For one thing, the dreaded DRM will be used. The restrictions placed on the user will be, no copies allowed; no burning to CD; no content sharing, and no transferring to portable digital players. Not many are there?

However, Nokia’s new service offers a good incentive compared to some music services that have subscriptions. The big plus is that the music you have downloaded will work without having to continually pay a subscription to keep it alive. That said, it could have been so much better without DRM.

(1) Jim Bauer Music and Movie Downloads says:

It will be wonderful when a case works it’s way though the court system to make some sense out of the rights the user should have when they purchase music or movies. The world is a different place and you should not have to buy multiple versions of the same music if you have multiple players.
