Qtrax’s Free Music Fails to Materialize
Qtrax, a New York based digital music service, revealed at the weekend that it had signed music deals to provide a whopping 25 million free and legal music tracks. Qtrax revealed the news at a conference during the MIDEM event in Cannes – this is the music industry's main annual festival. The majority of the ad-funded downloads were supposed to have come from the big four records labels – EMI, Sony BMG, Warner, and Universal Music Group.
Today (January 29th), three of the major record labels have denied signing any deals with Qtrax. When the Qtrax chief executive, Alan Klepfisz, was questioned by the Times about misleading the public, he replied, "We do have industry agreements including the major labels”. He later went on to describe that the “ink hadn’t dried” with the deals they were working on - oh the humiliation of it all.
The lack of concrete music deals coupled with the fact that the Qtrax client should have been officially launched today has no doubt caused a lot of ‘red faces’ for the company. It appears at the time of writing this blog that Qtrax are experiencing a lack of music for download altogether. Instead a message reads, “welcome to Oracle application server 10g”?

How embarrassing for Qtrax. The industry has no love for liars that spend a million dollars on throwing parties instead of making deals. There’s a little more on this here:
