Fans Hammer Nine Inch Nails Website for Free Music
The rock group, Nine Inch Nails, has followed in the footsteps of Radiohead by offering free MP3 downloads via its website. The first 9 tracks of its new Ghosts I-IV instrumental collection can be downloaded for free. To purchase the complete works (36 tracks) costs just $5, and comes with a 40-page PDF, plus the option to choose from various digital audio formats.
Earlier this week, there were so many people connecting to the website that it crashed under the strain. Subsequently, the Ghosts I-IV collection started appearing on file sharing websites that some frustrated fans used to download the complete collection via their favorite P2P network. It is interesting to note at this point that in the FAQ section of their website, Ghosts I-IV is licensed under the creative commons license - this enables the freedom to copy, distribute, display, and perform the work.
Doesn't this give 'leechers' the excuse to not pay for it at all?

This is the new business model.
There will be many who follow this lead.
This is the new business model but that means that the live performance is now where the money is made, while the record is a loss leader to get people out to the shows whereas the tour used to be the loss leader for album sales. Trent is a very smart man and has got this down, he’s following a cool new business model and he’s got a great live show to boot. I know i wouldnt miss him at voodoo 2008 for anything (I also love any excuse to go to new orleans). Check out these videos of past NIN voodoo performances http://www.thetenthritual.com/?content=video
