New Media Discovery Website That Uses AI

Friday June 6, 2008

A new website called, The Filter, has been launched that uses advanced mathematics and artificial intelligence to help you discover new music and other types of media. Backed by the legendary Peter Gabriel, The Filter system aims to act as a "life jockey" and deliver recommended content based on your ratings of artists, genres, videos, literature, etc. The website is free to use and asks you to create a profile that is processed with an AI discovery engine to deliver up-to-date content as the information in your profile changes.

This is all well and good, but where is the social networking you may ask? The Filter website enables you to network with other users and navigate to content from their profiles. On a recent YouTube video, Peter Gabriel recalls speaking to computer scientist, Bill Joy, who once told him, "Perhaps people would prefer freedom from choice, rather than drowning in the freedom of choice that the Internet provides." Peter Gabriel then goes on to give an example of the information overload that we live with and likens it to cable TV where thousands of channels are available, but it is the discovery that is the hard part when there is too much choice.

i don’t like that someone could “filter” anything for me

[that's the slogan of the site, not the most genial marketing idea of the (past) century]

have it your way

I don’t know where to put this, but there’s a cool music website called Pandora.com that lets you listen to music that you might like (there’s also one called last.fm). I was wondering if there were any other similar sites.

Charlotte,
I know of MeeMix, AOL Radio, Slacker, Live365, and Soundpedia. There are probably many others similar to the above but this should keep you going for a bit! If anyone would like to expand on this topic, then why not use the MP3 forum.
