Are Your MP3s Normalized?

Friday October 17, 2008

How many times have you been listening to your favorite MP3 songs and been irritated by having to adjust the volume every time a new track starts to play? I've had my ears blasted on quite a few occasions over the years because of variations in the loudness of tracks. If you've purchase digital music downloads, ripped CDs, or built up your music collection via other sources, there's a good chance that you've got a selection of music files that need 'normalizing'.

The basic idea of how audio normalization works is that an audio software program, like MP3Gain, analyzes the 'loudness' of a digital music file and adjusts it to a set volume level. By standardizing all your music in this way, you will actually improve the quality of your music library. Files that were either too quiet, or had distortion (due to 'clipping') will now play clearly after normalization - this process will also save you the pain of having to keep your thumb on the volume all the time!

For more information on how to normalize your MP3 files, check out our MP3Gain tutorial that shows you how to quickly convert your whole MP3 library and without any loss of audio quality.
