Since Apple acquired and then proceeded to close down the Lala cloud music service last year (read article), people have been talking about when the computer and electronics giant will finally launch a cloud-based solution. According to an article by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) this could be soon using Apple's MobileMe service. Currently this is a paid-for option that costs $99 for a year's subscription, but this could be offered for free says the report. Undisclosed sources 'familiar with the situation' are reported to have said, "Apple is considering making MobileMe a free service that would serve as a 'locker' for personal memorabilia such as photos, music and videos, eliminating the need for devices to carry a lot of memory."
So, when can we expect to see this happen? According to the WSJ report, Apple's mobile offering is expected sometime this year -- some undisclosed sources have suggested as early as June.
If Apple did make this service free it would be a smart move seeing that there are already competing mobile solutions available for free. With Apple also currently developing a cut-down version of its iPhone 4 in order to compete with budget smart phones, a free MobileMe service would no doubt help the company to boost their position in the ever increasingly competitive mobile marketplace.
