kbps - Kilobits Per Second

By Mark Harris, About.com

Definition:

kilobits per second is a unit of measurement that represents the data transmission speed in units of 1000 bits (binary digits) per second. It is commonly thought that the only factor to consider regarding the quality of the sound is bit rate but there are other variables that influence sound quality such as compression algorithms, sample rate etc.

Also Known As: kbit/s
Examples:

If for example a song has a bit rate of 192 kbps, then the data transmission speed in bits per second (bit/s) is 192 x 1000 = 192,000 bits per second.
