How To Convert Audio Formats Using iTunes

By

Introduction

Sometimes you may need to convert existing songs to other audio formats to make them compatible for a particular piece of hardware, for example an MP3 player that can’t play AAC files. The iTunes software has the ability to transcode (convert) from one audio format to another providing that no DRM protection is present in the original file.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Setup – 2 minutes / transcoding time – depends on number of files and audio format settings.

Here's How:

  1. Configuring iTunes

Before you can start converting songs in your iTunes library, you need to select an audio format to convert to. To do this:

    PC Users:

    1. Click edit (from the main menu at the top of screen) and then click preferences.
    2. Select the advanced tab and then the importing tab.
    3. Click on the import using drop-down menu and select an audio format.
    4. To change bitrate settings, use the settings drop-down menu .
    5. Click the OK button to finish.

    Mac Users:

    1. Click on the iTunes menu and then choose preferences to see the configuration dialog box.
    2. Follow steps 2-5 for PC users to complete the setup.
  2. The Conversion Process

To start converting your music files you must first navigate to your music library by clicking on the music icon (situated in the left pane under library). Select the file(s) you need to convert and click on the advanced menu at the top of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear where you can select convert selection to MP3 etc. This menu item will change depending on what audio format you selected in the preferences.

After the conversion process is complete you will notice the new converted file(s) will be displayed alongside the original file(s). Play the new files to test!
