Facebook Steps Up to the Digital Music Plate
The social networking website, Facebook, has launched two new media channels in an effort to compete with the likes of MySpace. The new music and film pages have been added to attract music artists and film makers who will be able to network, promote and sell their creations. Facebook provides tailor-made applications for its new pages that allow artists and film makers to showcase their media by using music and video (flash) players. Fans can also interact by posting reviews and comment on what they think. Even though Facebook is way behind MySpace in terms of users, its uncluttered design and soon to be unveiled facelift may sway people to use their service in the long term.
Anyone that currently uses MySpace will know that music promotion is nothing new, but for Facebook it could be an important step forward to accelerating network growth that has stagnated recently. Social networking is still a relatively new area for music exposure, but one that record labels ought to take seriously; CD sales are now dropping and the uptake of on-demand music downloading is seeing rapid growth.
