Definition: WORM (Write Once, Read Many) is a way of storing data so that it is impossible to be overwritten. This optical storage technology allows data to be written to a disc only once but read multiple times; this makes it a very secure way to store important information.

WORM solutions were initially developed in the late 1970s but never became popular due to the lack of standardization. Today, CD-R and DVD-R media have replaced the non-standard devices of the 1970s; low cost and excellent cross-drive compatibilities make it a popular WORM solution.
