Vorbis is a lossy audio compression codec that actually gets its name from one of the characters in the Discworld book series written by Terry Pratchett -- namely, Exquisitor Vorbis. It is an open source project and is often referred to as OGG Vorbis due to the ogg wrapper format commonly used with it. It has been said by some audiophiles based on listening tests that aoTuV (a modified version of Vorbis) outperforms more popular lossy formats like AAC and WMA.
The audio format file extensions associated with Vorbis are:
- .ogg
- .oga
As well as several software media players supporting Vorbis, online music services like Jamendo and the very popular Spotify also use this compression algorithm. A few Internet radio stations also employ this codec for their streaming audio broadcasts.
